THE XX

2009 has certainly been a busy year for South West London's, The XX. Their minimalist, new wave sound captured on their debut album, XX, is definitely success worthy and their enormous following comes to no surprise. Lately what's really got The SSW excited is their recent remix for Florence and The Machine! They re-worked this track into a 2-step, funky, fantasy, it's so addictive!!! Also check out the beautiful video a fan made by matching Pariah's remix of "Basic Space" with a scene from Godard's "Vivre Sa Vie".

JAYNE & HER PINK PALACE

Blonde, busty, and beautiful, Jayne Mansfield was at the top of the Hollywood, sex symbol chain in the 1950's. Aside from achieving ultimate starlet status, Mansfield was the mother of five children, married three times, divorced twice, and reportedly had an affair with JFK, all by the age of 34 when she tragically died in a automobile accident. Mansfield was a determined woman, whatever she wanted she got! After catching a glimpse of hunky, Mikey "Mr. Universe" Hargitay, they married and set up house at the PINK PALACE. The Pink Palace was, obviously, decorated with a pink palette in mind and featured a heart shaped bath, fireplace and pool, along with gold and other over the top accents . Unfortunately the Beverly Hills home was demolished, but from what you can see in the photo's the Pink Palace was a true reflection of the glamorous, fantasy world that was Jayne's reality.

COME ON GARY, LIGHT MY FIRE

Gary Card continuously catches my attention with his wild sets, props,
illustrations and styling of models. His latest collaboration for "London is Burning"
with photographer Jacob Sutton in The New York Times Style Magazine, Winter 2009
was inspired by pyromania and pagan rituals. The fiery T channels influence from
English cult film "The Wicker Man" circa 1973.

"I didn't want to make a purely sculptural piece. I wanted to make something
that somehow moved and felt alive, something aggressive."

GIVE ME YOUR LOVE

Besides hearing the track "Give Me Your Love" at a Disco club during the early 80's, New York based singer, Sylvia Striplin, recieved little recognition in the music world. Her only solo album, produced by Roy Ayers, features her soulful vocals over funky, disco fused rhythms. "You Can't Turn Me Away" has become infamous as the sample for Junior M.A.F.I.A's hit "Get Money"; artists Naughty By Nature, Armand Van Helden and even the Backstreet Boys have all jumped on sampling this rare and amazing boogie groove.

THROUGH THE EYE OF A MUSE - PATTIE BOYD

English model and photographer Pattie Boyd, ex-wife of George Harrison and Eric Clapton,
sparked the most extraordinary love triangle in rock history. She was the inspiration and
muse behind love songs "Something", "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight". Now a successful
photographer, Boyd exhibits her work from intimate moments with Harrison and Clapton.

CAN

Synonymous with the German, "Krautrock" movement of the early 70's, CAN's
experimental and psychedelic sound has been a source of inspiration for the
ambient, new wave, electronic and hip-hop genres. Experience Krautrock at
it's very best!
